Art, Dance and Music

Author: admin · January 13. 2009 · Language Excursions

It is the second time that we have run the Language Excursions with the theme Art, Dance and Expression. As with the first time, we took part in a dance workshop and we had an art workshop with John Bauer. Please follow the link for more details about our “first time”!

Instead of the drum session, however, we visited Mac McKenzie in his home in Bridgetown. We heard more about the traditions of the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival or Coon Carnival or simply Kaapse Klopse. We played the traditional instruments, the gummie drum and the tambourine. The carnival in Cape Town has its roots back to the times of slavery where slaves had their only “free day” on the second of January (Tweede Nuwe Jaar). For more info please click here!

Watch our video of the dance workshop with Celeste Botha, where she explains about her passion for dance, and where this passion began.

Here are a few pictures from this years 101st Carnival in Cape Town on the 3rd of January, taken from our school!
