5 Months flew by. I don’t even know where the time went. But I loved it all and will think back on these 5 months with a smile on my face. Thanks to all. To Johannes for quiding and teaching me about Kurus English. I never heard of the concept, but now that I’ve experienced them, I know they work and will tell everybody about them. Thank you Diana for all the advice with the videos and for your help during the internship. And thank you Gavin & Aaliya for having fun in your space behind me. That always put a smile on my face. And for course for all the correcting of my English.

Thanks everybody for these great five months and let’s keep in contact. Keep on uploading photo’s on Facebook & keep the blog up to date!!!

Thanks & love to all

Dear Kurus Team

Thank you to everybody who is working in the team. Thank you especially to Aaliya and Jeffrey. You taught me a lot and showed me learning grammar could also be fun.

For sure I will come back to Cape Town, as always, but I will also come back as a student. Also i will tell everybody at home that Language Excursions are a big possiblity to improve the language and allows, at the same time to learn a lot about Cape Town..

I wish you all the best and I’m looking forward to see you again.

Judith from Germany

Dear All

I really enjoyed the course and these weeks here in Cape Town.

Thanks for all the good advice about the city and about my English. I’ll tell my friend in Brazil how awesome my trip was. And sure tell them to come to Kurus English.

I apologize for something. I’ll try to keep improving my English as well!

Beijos Dilsa, Brazil

Mac McKenzie in Johannes’ hometown

Mac visited Johannes’ hometown Aschaffenburg and Unterafferbach, hosted by Johannes’ parents Margarete and Rudi (THANKS!). Mac met up with the a music group in Niedernberg (Thanks to Johannes’ brother Matthias and his girlfriend Sandra!) and the Unterafferbacher guitar group (Thanks Eisi!) for a Cape Town Jazz music workshop. Furthermore, Mac met the composer Marcus Rüdel at the music school Aschaffenburg as well as Burkard Fleckenstein from the cultural council of the city Aschaffenburg. Last but not least, Mac played live at the South African Evening held by the restaurant “Post” in Unterafferbach. Mac played with the guitar group as well as Sandran and Matthias in front of 125 people! Many thanks to Werner and Erika, chef and owners of the restaurant and Rudi and Margarete for organising this great evening. And finally many thanks to all “Afferbischer” for coming to this unique event and supporting Mac!

Please watch the videos below.

Article in Die Burger

Johannes and Iain (Coffeebeans Routes) gave an interview in Afrikaans newspaper Die Burger. The interview is about Kurus English and our concept with learning the English language. Especially our Language Excursions play a big part in the interview.

For our Afrikaans and maybe Dutch reading crowd: ‘n baie goeie interview!

Media & Expression

Last week’s Language Excursion theme was Media & Expression.

The first Excursion was to the Cape Talk radio station. There we met Africa and Molane, who told us all about Cape Talk and also just what talk radio was about, how talk radio differs from music radio, what people would like to hear from the Cape Talk and how their news differs from the their sister station, in Johannesburg. This was all very interesting, especially the fact that radio is probably the fastest medium to broadcast the news. All anyone needs is a telephone, and they can broadcast live on air. The news is aired immediately in this way.

The second Excursion was to Cherry Flava, where Jonathan and Heinrich divided us up two groups and gave us an assignment to “write a letter back home“. But the trick was not to use words but rather images to express what we wanted to say to the people back home. Each group had about 30 minutes in the shopping centre to take photos. When we got back the photos were put in the right order, and the other team had to guess what we wanted to tell to our loved ones back home. A great way to express yourself creatively.

The last Excursion was amazing. We were invited to take a look inside the studios of ETV. We started with a discussion about what makes news and what not. Then Ali took us through the office, and he showed us the different workplaces, from editing, to writing, to producing, to actually making the news. Ali asked us if we wanted to stay to watch the news live from the sound studio. Of course we were more than willing to do that. It was great to see behind the scenes and to see the amount of work that has to be put in, and all for a 15 minute news reading.

Thanks go out to all the Excursion hosts of last week. It was a great!

Table Mountain

The first thing you see when you arrive in Cape Town is the Table Mountain. But this sight cannot merely be  one to be watched from a afar, because for the active among us, you can hike up to the top of the mountain. There are several trails from which you can choose.

Depending on if you are a big fan of hiking, you can choose any of the trails on a basis of difficulty. Make sure you are fit, because the climb takes a while, and it might be more fun if you don’t have to stop every ten minutes to have a breather. But no matter how hard the hike up is, it will all be worth it once you are on the top. If you hike up near sunset, you will have a beautiful view of the sun setting over the sea.

This doesn’t mean that you should only hike up at dusk. During the day it is great to hike up the mountain and spend several hours exploring the top of the table or even having a picknic up there!

For the less active  among us, there is a the cable car to take you to the top. The ascent takes about 15 minutes, and you are reworded with a spectacular view of Cape Town on your way.

This is a must see, no matter how limited a time you may have in Cape Town!
